Do you suffer from seasonal allergies?

Spring is in the air! Flowers are blooming, leaves are growing and allergy season is in full swing. Unfortunately for millions of people, this means suffering from sneezing, itching, watery eyes and stuffy noses. If you experience these symptoms, you're not alone: over 40% of the world's population suffer from seasonal allergies. Learn how Chiropractic care can help ease allergy symptoms.

How Allergies Work

Allergies are one of the most common chronic diseases. An allergy occurs when the body's immune system encounters a harmless substance (allergen), mistakes it as harmful and overreacts to it. When the allergen is inhaled or touched, the immune system produces an antibody called immunoglobulin E (IgE). These antibodies attack the allergens, resulting in an allergic reaction.

How Chiropractic Care Can Help

Many patients report a reduction of allergy symptoms when treated regularly with Chiropractic care. Communication between the brain and spinal cord is key. Any misalignments in the spine can interrupt that communication, resulting in a lowered immune system. With proper communication between the brain and spinal cord, Chiropractic care can help regulate the body's response to allergens.

Immune System: Misalignments and subluxations in the neck and spine can interfere with the brain's communication with the rest of the body. A disruption in the upper cervical spine may compromise immunity levels and increase allergy symptoms. An adjustment can help restore the alignment and reopen the communication channels between the brain and the spine.

Stress Hormones: Many allergy sufferers also experience weakened adrenal glands. This in turn reduces the body's ability to cope with allergic reactions. Adrenal glands are directly connected by spinal nerves, so a properly aligned spine can help regulate cortisol (stress hormone) levels that the body produces, thus alleviating the severity of allergy symptoms.

Supplements & Essential Oils

Certain supplements and essential oils can help reduce and relieve allergy symptoms. For instance, acidophilus (a probiotic) is the good bacteria that lives in our digestive tract. Probiotics help improve healthy digestion and immunity. Vitamin C is an immune-boosting supplement that lowers histamine levels in the bloodstream. 2,000mg of Vitamin C is recommended per day to help cut histamine levels. Peppermint oil and Eucalyptus oil are two essential oils that help unclog sinuses and soothe allergy symptoms. Diffusing a few drops of these oils at home can help provide relief from congestion.
